Twenge PhD</b></p><p><b></b></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikbXAfSVxbqfPLEfu8HFbe4V4fFLtARuv0nZfTDakWMU6kNh3IEW_5FQIApC3tVPcqBXK4RDpW8yLFNW1vRQMBIevllhjzGRdyyuiCp6v3dOnLiHhEbqcLOiGxXMjKSY5_LPmmEnZ9IIxzmxHFffgs-4G_poFkwImrUjf1unQtXp6s21rcsdmfehVFIqyh/s1500/61J-trz+5QL._SL1500_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="982" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikbXAfSVxbqfPLEfu8HFbe4V4fFLtARuv0nZfTDakWMU6kNh3IEW_5FQIApC3tVPcqBXK4RDpW8yLFNW1vRQMBIevllhjzGRdyyuiCp6v3dOnLiHhEbqcLOiGxXMjKSY5_LPmmEnZ9IIxzmxHFffgs-4G_poFkwImrUjf1unQtXp6s21rcsdmfehVFIqyh/s320/61J-trz+5QL._SL1500_.jpg" width="209" /></a></b></div><b><br /> </b><p></p><p>I've always kind of discounted the generational differences. I figure I'm too much of a individual to fit into any such category anyway. However, it turns out we're called Gen X precisely because we're so hard to categorize! I really did connect with not only what Dr. Twenge says about my generation, but also her writings on my parents' generations and how things have changed. The biggest change through the years is always technology and how it affects our daily lives. And trends in social areas such as work, marriage, and children reflect our increasing lifespans and slower maturation as it currently takes much longer for people to finish schooling and begin a career. These are just some of the highlights of what I learned through this book. I recommend everyone give it a read!</p><p>Favorite comic book, new: It was very nice to get to read some new Ms. Marvel comics this year! Co-written by Iman Vellani (the actress who plays Kamala in the MCU) Ms. Marvel: New Mutant was a good, fun series. Also I have to give a shout out to Avengers, INC. An Avengers series focusing on the Wasp, as she tries to solve a few mysteries, such as why her old foe Whirlwind had died and come back as Victor Shade. Great art on this one by one of my long-time favorites, Leonard Kirk!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD80uH6BIBWHC8J18rtIv041te2NBhEPn_JVF9WHpgouUyLHz9wvORiem9OIsbZz6V6gNk-NaaQeJUCCOS23KGhjiefiMLwyfhvAulLVgPL4X3H5JasRGnaQZN53ksFZQ0HrZHuDYhhSdCcNwWthctQNm49ynAaD6f8OSpl4P_y1S5EZgIREUpYZxmJY0q/s278/avinc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="278" data-original-width="181" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD80uH6BIBWHC8J18rtIv041te2NBhEPn_JVF9WHpgouUyLHz9wvORiem9OIsbZz6V6gNk-NaaQeJUCCOS23KGhjiefiMLwyfhvAulLVgPL4X3H5JasRGnaQZN53ksFZQ0HrZHuDYhhSdCcNwWthctQNm49ynAaD6f8OSpl4P_y1S5EZgIREUpYZxmJY0q/s1600/avinc.jpg" width="181" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>Favorite comic book, old: I decided this year to read all the Black Panther solo series, most of which I had never read before. Starting with writer Don McGregor's Jungle Action run, which was the very forst solo series for T'Challa. McGregor created most of what we have of Wakanda today, as he centered most of his series on the fictional home of the Black Panther and created many of the supporting cast and villains that we still see today. These earliest stories are very different than current comics, and the writing seemed very non-comic booky to me. I don't know how else to describe it, but it has it's good and bad points. Mostly it is amazing to read the stories that really started the legend. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Duhdi8br0Vr6cJWxcK-0poDURxX3AxgwPP9ClREIKlWtGGAcxksBGgr9E9iTHIZ7pIuaVuAsILelrAdT_okSC-f1soA2B1wG-FEGSta0ZupWMvaybIH5VFHyelXsshUTYpKwm3jtYrJfvzAwb9H5egeidLoSfPr81sr-68NrRwj_UkcsRneVTtZwft6C/s259/bpja.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="194" data-original-width="259" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Duhdi8br0Vr6cJWxcK-0poDURxX3AxgwPP9ClREIKlWtGGAcxksBGgr9E9iTHIZ7pIuaVuAsILelrAdT_okSC-f1soA2B1wG-FEGSta0ZupWMvaybIH5VFHyelXsshUTYpKwm3jtYrJfvzAwb9H5egeidLoSfPr81sr-68NrRwj_UkcsRneVTtZwft6C/s1600/bpja.jpg" width="259" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>The later run by Jack Kirby is incredible fun. Sure, it's very 70's Kirby, and some of the stories could involve just about any character (very Mister Miracle I'd say) but Kirby has a way of showing how regal and commanding T'Challa's presence is. The best part of the story is when Jack gets the King of Wakanda back to his homeland.</p><p>And two more quick notes: McGregor's other big Black Panther story, most of which I had read when it was first published, was a series in Marvel Comics Presents drawn by the legendary Gene Colan. It was the main factor in my buying all those MCP comics back then! And I've currently gotten into Christopher Priest's run from the late 90's-, which really makes T'Challa a superstar and also powers him up quite a bit with much more Wakanda tech! </p><p>Favorite small press comic: The Ninja Pandemica, which I discussed <a href="https://fedscomic.blogspot.com/2023/07/review-ninja-pandemica.html">here</a></p><p>Favorite concert I attended: The Warning, of whom I have hailed many times in <a href="https://fedscomic.blogspot.com/2022/12/the-warning-art-in-three-stages.html">previous posts.</a> I feel fortunate to have been able to see them live, and I listen to their music all the time. Check out their performances at the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Pxe9KTgJc" target="_blank">MTV video awards!</a> It's great to hear such young people playing great rock music. Do like I do, and buy their physical media!</p><p>Okay, that's plenty for now. Maybe someone will leave a comment as to their favorites of 2023.<br /></p>Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-79434153567538657422023-12-22T09:47:00.000-05:002023-12-22T09:47:11.261-05:00Peanuts in 3 stages<p>I did this drawing earlier this year mostly because I thought it would be fun, and because I'm a huge Charles Schulz fan, as well as a fan of all things Peanuts! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvWvHBF1-GuZdV-luOJWxoje2pfuMQA_Sr_aPcZ57SynYgcKsxBh_kDpfcRZiy2wN3Lok3LmDA4EgCdrGFIWMnt04uG9MT12znCfPh8Pcabcw8IEMKD4TIemvzjOCOa1_yIWAEfGNI_JZuXlqOOgZUZeYg3fOWKowFlY03vXibk_wcSbZGhvw3wyTr4Otq/s4650/Peanutpencil0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4650" data-original-width="3400" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvWvHBF1-GuZdV-luOJWxoje2pfuMQA_Sr_aPcZ57SynYgcKsxBh_kDpfcRZiy2wN3Lok3LmDA4EgCdrGFIWMnt04uG9MT12znCfPh8Pcabcw8IEMKD4TIemvzjOCOa1_yIWAEfGNI_JZuXlqOOgZUZeYg3fOWKowFlY03vXibk_wcSbZGhvw3wyTr4Otq/w469-h640/Peanutpencil0001.JPG" width="469" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhN1gsk3-6DEz0E2Fp_WERsMdSO4Kl8_aipGOBVJ-UA5uGq0cbAjKplggAzPATKSXyyMplKgmXdYGAY-4VJ3hLoHrAL10UaGIhgey-3Xp1UP5sAJtNROf0j81DlVNFUYNjbx7Umkd-QDHrFvXi8z6nSaMFqpZt7Tfm0JoBGjiv3ySf2HLm1BTRWAvE6QPu/s4650/Peanutink0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4650" data-original-width="3400" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhN1gsk3-6DEz0E2Fp_WERsMdSO4Kl8_aipGOBVJ-UA5uGq0cbAjKplggAzPATKSXyyMplKgmXdYGAY-4VJ3hLoHrAL10UaGIhgey-3Xp1UP5sAJtNROf0j81DlVNFUYNjbx7Umkd-QDHrFvXi8z6nSaMFqpZt7Tfm0JoBGjiv3ySf2HLm1BTRWAvE6QPu/w469-h640/Peanutink0001.JPG" width="469" /></a></div><p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzu-Mg7Ao1oDKCGdmVyNVPQVr16QDjsmstkzmDqT3KZSfW1VLnajOQEY3JCu4GAGGRYNlkh8bSmKZpZtk3IAa9whoVkqV4uMjSadq4IBjuQjfZxh8VQUNZDcYH4pYyV2XKXMCfbVPMNOraQGX1JhoJA5DZwf-ije8DEmiMwfuKscksX0HOuJ-ZOXdl09LZ/s4650/Peanutcolor0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4650" data-original-width="3400" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzu-Mg7Ao1oDKCGdmVyNVPQVr16QDjsmstkzmDqT3KZSfW1VLnajOQEY3JCu4GAGGRYNlkh8bSmKZpZtk3IAa9whoVkqV4uMjSadq4IBjuQjfZxh8VQUNZDcYH4pYyV2XKXMCfbVPMNOraQGX1JhoJA5DZwf-ije8DEmiMwfuKscksX0HOuJ-ZOXdl09LZ/w468-h640/Peanutcolor0001.JPG" width="468" /></a></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><p><br /></p>Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-22888448161763060542023-12-05T11:02:00.005-05:002023-12-05T11:02:29.091-05:00The F.E.D.s retrospective<p>I just posted the last page of my 3-volume F.E.D.s comic online. I got to thinking about the F.E.D.s and thought I'd write some reflections on the creative process over the years.</p><p>I started looking at and buying a lot of "small press" comics in the mid-1990s, around the time I finished my undergraduate degree in Art. I decided I might as well create my own comic, since it would be a good way to exercise my creative side even if I never made any profit off the book. I thought about many genre I could use, but in the end I picked a super-hero book because I had some ideas swirling around in my head concerning characters I had been playing with over the years.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnpMPa9qEog87QtGbfHqwjeTf2Ysq5R1_hfWqT-U06iZ13W66d3jJZyzRdjSWRi9X5h8BLDApm7bQTm4ieTYDI2cq36_pqXz1Db4pWFSx7vUkWxqkC_Sm_xCeAFodnnn-sEYw1LKCmNmuqK7TGGcpGK50p52AXLJInpUOsDEF1Y5wKV1XB_boeP20A8Ro/s795/feds1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="795" data-original-width="563" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAnpMPa9qEog87QtGbfHqwjeTf2Ysq5R1_hfWqT-U06iZ13W66d3jJZyzRdjSWRi9X5h8BLDApm7bQTm4ieTYDI2cq36_pqXz1Db4pWFSx7vUkWxqkC_Sm_xCeAFodnnn-sEYw1LKCmNmuqK7TGGcpGK50p52AXLJInpUOsDEF1Y5wKV1XB_boeP20A8Ro/s320/feds1.jpg" width="227" /></a></div><p></p><p>I did the first issue in 1999. It was ten pages and intended to be a kind of teaser, introducing the world and concepts I had and leading into a longer comic series. I started with a high-contrast art style I had developed in college inspired by comics such as Hellboy and Sin City. But then I started reading the "Essential" reprint black-and-white comics, and quickly I modified into an "old school" art style. I didn't really think of it as "old school". Just me trying to make comics like the ones that inspired me.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-N4UhKvf34M5f2am39hp6P_A9-fcOEd72rKVZYwIrC-mgj44DkbKTqgw7MNSvF8eOTTC5UXr_IgQnt0yk112v4f_672psgCx7q4k8gmX8Vo9n5NMsP7KP5KbhKzm-zQ2IHDnJ42AKvz0KoKRlZFetRlyeYE-VqvYdsKN61rkc1hl43fVHRi6jnWmCMuLJ/s1201/feds2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1201" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-N4UhKvf34M5f2am39hp6P_A9-fcOEd72rKVZYwIrC-mgj44DkbKTqgw7MNSvF8eOTTC5UXr_IgQnt0yk112v4f_672psgCx7q4k8gmX8Vo9n5NMsP7KP5KbhKzm-zQ2IHDnJ42AKvz0KoKRlZFetRlyeYE-VqvYdsKN61rkc1hl43fVHRi6jnWmCMuLJ/s320/feds2.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>The story itself turned out rather complex, but I hope I didn't make any continuity errors. Ideas changed in my head as I went along, but I didn't deviate from my intended ending all the time. The first volume is the longest as it sets out to introduce a lot of characters and situations. My main goal was to show how difficult the journey is for our protagonist, John Chisolm, as he gets thrust into the life of an Extra-Normal. <p></p><p>I included a lot of things that are there in the story, but I didn't specifically state, such as certain characters who appear in their costumed identity and their civilian identity without stating it outright, and the characters who are a romantic couple, but I never "revealed" it. Speaking of romance, I didn't want John and Ari to end up together, because her betrayal would be too much. The time-travels in vol. 3 was a last minute idea that I used to cement this idea. But I also wanted to show that he respected her and that was the main reason he didn't express his feelings-- he thinks their relationship should be professional. And I added the lines at the end about him dating someone to show that he is interested in romance, when the situation is right.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG0s-VcF0x8iJL5QcOKGehGz56nDTjx0Sm32fswnffwjcuzo93wEZ-Cki1U6eQNv_oJUIy5UVhWxhkAufo8xeQ_zMkGiLnUOV3neFNDoklOPXECN3vARqO9Yg4XC90HoIyc6hTlEaXwiMsA-lYBNpAK8Fa9UydYgT0ixcwTaOaZ82M0g0n9Eg-4SE0j_Hl/s1236/feds3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1236" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG0s-VcF0x8iJL5QcOKGehGz56nDTjx0Sm32fswnffwjcuzo93wEZ-Cki1U6eQNv_oJUIy5UVhWxhkAufo8xeQ_zMkGiLnUOV3neFNDoklOPXECN3vARqO9Yg4XC90HoIyc6hTlEaXwiMsA-lYBNpAK8Fa9UydYgT0ixcwTaOaZ82M0g0n9Eg-4SE0j_Hl/s320/feds3.jpg" width="207" /></a></div><p></p><p>I also decided to use "real time" when I did the story, because there would be a lot of references to what happened in the past, and I thought would be easier than constantly referring to "5 years ago" or "ten years ago".</p><p>Finally, I've received many comments from readers over the years. I thank everyone for giving my little comic a shot. This F.E.D.s story is over, but I just finished drawing an 8-page First Lady story for the next OH, Comics anthology and I'm several pages into my next regular tale, a sci-fi comic story.<br /></p>Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-8010046345008420802023-07-24T15:09:00.003-04:002023-07-24T15:27:35.050-04:00Review: The Ninja Pandemica<p> Michael Anthony Carroll is a prolific cartoonist from Columbus Ohio or thereabouts. Anyway, I picked up his "The Ninja Pandemica" paperback this year at the Small Press and Alternative Comics Exposition, which I like to refer to as SPACE. So I thought I'd write a review.</p><p>First, despite the name, this book has nothing to do with pandas. It is, however, in black-and-white, which is the same color as most pandas. So that's cool. Second, the book contains a bunch of short comic stories Mike did in 2020, while the world was dealing with a global pandemic. Third, the stories are funny.</p><p>Mike does these comics in his own inimitable style (that I could probably imitate if I tried really, really hard). He likes to come up with weird but funny new characters and ideas, such as "lesser element ninjas", and that's what makes his work so much fun. He admits he doesn't do a lot of narrative stories once he invents the characters, so maybe that's something someone should do some time. Like, take once of Mike's teams and write a 40 page graphic novel about their adventures? Maybe that would be cool.</p><p>Oh, and Ninja are very good at being undetected. That's why you can't spot the ninjas hiding in my review...</p><p>Or any real reviewing...</p><p>Anyways, here's some picture and a link to Mike's website! I highly recommend to buy as much of his stuff as you can!</p><p><a href=" https://www.facebook.com/mackeral1964" target="_blank"> https://www.facebook.com/mackeral1964</a></p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; The idea of having a "non-team" made up of anyone who didn't fit the Avengers type of team made for some great stories. Eventually, the Defenders settled a bit with three steady members who became the core of the team. I think every successful Defenders run needs these three, plus a lot of guest-stars, both popular and esoteric!</p><p>Here's my tribute to Nighthawk, Valkyrie, and Hellcat! Days ago, I finally had the opportunity to see The Warning perform live! One of the things I was thinking about beforehand was how when the band first went viral, there was a novelty to watching some teenage girls cover big time rock tunes. Now they’ve outgrown that novelty. In other words, they have to just be really good at what they do. And they are, without a doubt, very VERY good!<b id="docs-internal-guid-02106a29-7fff-9329-4875-cb89eff3793d" style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></b><br /><br />So let’s talk about the show. I saw The Warning perform in Flint, Michigan at <a href="#">The Machine Shop</a>. It was a few hours drive from where I live in Ohio, but it was worth the trip. The Machine shop is a nice little venue, with a very rockin’ outlaw type atmosphere, but very well maintained and clean. Also, the crowd was just awesome! Everyone was having a good time and actively rocking to the music! If you aren’t from the area, you might not know there’s supposed to be this big rivalry between Ohio and Michigan. Yet I have nothing negative to say about anything during the show or my trip.<br /><br /><br />On to the music! The opening act was <a href="#">Hero The Band</a>. I was a little concerned when I couldn’t hear the vocals in the first song, but that got cleared up and by their third number, I was impressed! They had great stage presence, and out on a nice show with some very nice original songs, plus one cover. I particularly liked the song “Back to Myself”, which you can listen to here: <a href="#">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuoywO6oMWo</a></div><div class="separator"> </div><div class="separator"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOThs0EFCcEcCC2iIbfY8N0cG8xPMRSdMunTSCfqPHG_qCtgtBbkCDs-Ec5YJiLeQRWf1uyApLgvXn6PcaVjQgoeE66zEqE_4EGXTv61nfMAv2_22W_xp8YsGJyTJKDss96sQopIL484aadhn1Y4Crsa-tOo-5dpK3dl4pnk8BVzR0X0TCtXl2jK42-Q/s1124/concert.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1124" data-original-width="843" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOThs0EFCcEcCC2iIbfY8N0cG8xPMRSdMunTSCfqPHG_qCtgtBbkCDs-Ec5YJiLeQRWf1uyApLgvXn6PcaVjQgoeE66zEqE_4EGXTv61nfMAv2_22W_xp8YsGJyTJKDss96sQopIL484aadhn1Y4Crsa-tOo-5dpK3dl4pnk8BVzR0X0TCtXl2jK42-Q/s320/concert.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From my view<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><b id="docs-internal-guid-02106a29-7fff-9329-4875-cb89eff3793d" style="font-weight: normal;"></b> <br /></div><div class="separator">And now to talk about The Warning! It’s amazing how much they’ve grown and progressed since I first took notice of them when someone shared their original “Enter Sandman” cover. But when they took the stage the first thing I noticed was that they are still very young! Yet their fans, such as me are….more aged. But I think that reflects their style of music. I’m gonna call it “old school rock” and it appeals to those of us who have been on the planet a few more decades than the Villarreal sisters. I also think we older people appreciate anyone their age who admits music started before the year 2000!<br /><br /><br />And their performance was even better than I hoped. It’s very hard for me to describe. The entire set was exciting, and I was awed by the level of excitement the music generated. They started off playing “Z”, which is a great beginning because it has such a hard driving beat. All their songs are good, but I think their newest stuff is the best. (Which is a very good thing, because it shows growth.) So I think things really got exciting when they played “Choke” with the high vocals and emotional lyrics. I’d like to mention something individual about Dany, Pau, and Ale, but I find it hard to differentiate between them as artists. They each excel at their role within the whole that is The Warning, and that’s what makes this band so good. They are excellent at not just playing and singing, but performing. By this I mean they are entertaining and fun to watch on stage, and they play to the crowd extremely well. Someone asked me recently if I had a favorite member of the band, and I honestly can say I do not.<br /><br /><br />I do have favorite songs, however. As I mentioned earlier, mostly from their newest collection. I was very happy that they played both of their Spanish-language songs in the set, although my Spanish is terrible and I can’t sing along well. And P.S.Y.C.H.O.T.I.C was a surprise closer, because I don’t remember seeing it on their set lists from this tour. Survive is the oldest song they played. The co-lead vocals and extended instrumental ending keep this song driving until the end. They played their new version of “Enter Sandman”. But I think the highlight among highlights was “<a href="#">Evolve</a>” as the penultimate tune.<br /><br /><br />I hope the band is enjoying traveling the USA. I hope they get a lot of great feedback from fans. I hope they keep coming back around this way so I can see them again. Maybe in Ohio so they can worry less about those scary Michigan drivers. (Hey, I had to get in one hack on Michigan…we are rivals, after all!)<br /></div><b id="docs-internal-guid-02106a29-7fff-9329-4875-cb89eff3793d" style="font-weight: normal;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img height="400" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/ZgDt5yhsr2lVcX8WW6DH2MQ2xKf-WCfnUfJw5BMnbUgoAzwqP7V20AOpMMhKv54AfyUpRVqqBy-ZsVQQogEFULIrB8SVIcBrTiWCumRVAS92yOrQ0uaUCMJcWmbIz5tBXPvM_xn2WDHWI176MA=w317-h400" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px;" width="317" /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Set list</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> </td></tr></tbody></table></b>Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-68064346896608759952022-03-20T10:34:00.000-04:002022-03-20T10:34:08.797-04:00Spider-Man and his....friends?<p> Here's three stages of an arachnid themed drawing a did. I've had the pleasure of sculpting many of them. But I decided to do something different and draw them in the same style I did my Captain America drawings. I tried to stay true to the characters while giving them my own touch.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhn8RO89-cy4k3HH3_Ea9CmT3g1tJ7AatEMEtHehrj6lLPLwr6HXD8WFParVp30aivrZxZllTqd7_6bP8i1p9m9ovooXhgb4EWOonQ83NBsh2RjHfyfUpf941FudIOxG5yrRvNUb_Xkah6fnK8fTcArNdArqGoz52pjTAmNP16XqIyDx9yN9KKlUy8Y0g=s4610" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4610" data-original-width="3386" height="577" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhn8RO89-cy4k3HH3_Ea9CmT3g1tJ7AatEMEtHehrj6lLPLwr6HXD8WFParVp30aivrZxZllTqd7_6bP8i1p9m9ovooXhgb4EWOonQ83NBsh2RjHfyfUpf941FudIOxG5yrRvNUb_Xkah6fnK8fTcArNdArqGoz52pjTAmNP16XqIyDx9yN9KKlUy8Y0g=w424-h577" width="424" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjM2KqdeoPP-vG5AlsQF0n_fbg7VykiVnn-I1WWieSwpQGNRqeeUk7W0SBIRWF-Cf68VZ6LzbSKZn8SVArgaP2JPfVeLS6r72-XF9oLWNFZhoMZovbYw5XaZltjhjgZ1fwCqIvA1f1ds6F_1tUb7iyxQkbZ8hHP4tXDnv3ytmEtUcPNPVhjfQM3c5jGww=s4650" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4650" data-original-width="3386" height="546" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjM2KqdeoPP-vG5AlsQF0n_fbg7VykiVnn-I1WWieSwpQGNRqeeUk7W0SBIRWF-Cf68VZ6LzbSKZn8SVArgaP2JPfVeLS6r72-XF9oLWNFZhoMZovbYw5XaZltjhjgZ1fwCqIvA1f1ds6F_1tUb7iyxQkbZ8hHP4tXDnv3ytmEtUcPNPVhjfQM3c5jGww=w398-h546" width="398" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjsCwr9MSiTJG7cVWDtdgW0EGRsJhxIkB3H6VD9yIC7xMViMdnyBaBfc3uwonp5cCXUG85o8LnKdGvEUNWNplHLrL8fyLNmtfEiMOfSfweu294IZFl5R1CDIk16_wTL1s11ypyBKTFPG9sR94qefuAfY02ZG3fsVieR6f8a1HK38kaheuJZTO5KhH3Wkw=s4650" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4650" data-original-width="3386" height="605" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjsCwr9MSiTJG7cVWDtdgW0EGRsJhxIkB3H6VD9yIC7xMViMdnyBaBfc3uwonp5cCXUG85o8LnKdGvEUNWNplHLrL8fyLNmtfEiMOfSfweu294IZFl5R1CDIk16_wTL1s11ypyBKTFPG9sR94qefuAfY02ZG3fsVieR6f8a1HK38kaheuJZTO5KhH3Wkw=w441-h605" width="441" /></a></div><br /><p>If you'd like to check out Paris' work--and you should! Not the real-life heroes though. Heroes such as Firemen, Soldiers, Parents, and others are very good, true. But I was thinking about how people, especially kids today, look up to fictional heroes. How do these heroes matter to kids?</p><p>I had my heroes when I was young, and I think they mattered. Luke Skywalker mattered to me as the average guy who fought evil. I guess he wasn't really "average guy". But he did work very hard and overcome a lot of obstacles in order to fulfill his dream. I think super-heroes such as the X-Men are important to a legion of fans. The X-Men is a very important metaphor for minorities and anyone else who feels picked on for who they are. The heroes are people that children look up to, even if these heroes are fictional.</p><p>And this brings me to the Black Panther. He is, of course, on my mind due to the recent untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed the Panther onscreen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've always loved the Black Panther. He's an important hero for many reasons.</p><p>Jack Kirby and Stan Lee created T'Challa in 1966, and he was the first African character published by a major comic company. He broke a barrier, but even more important, he was and is a great character. Fighting racism was a theme Lee and Kirby would tackle separately and together many times. Though they weren't of African ancestry, they were two Jewish guys who had helped the world win the war against Hitler's Third Reich. The Black Panther matters because young readers who were black had a character that looked like them that they could look up to. This representation in popular media has shown to have a real positive impact on readers. T'Challa was a king, an leader, a genius, and became an Avenger. He's been a co-star or star of many comic series.</p><p>And he's also the main character in one of Marvel's best movies. The Black Panther movie is one of my favorite, and Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of T'Challa is just about perfect in every way. He gave the King of Wakanda a real regal presence among the many other great characters and actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.</p><p>I drew this picture as my tribute to Mr. Boseman. I know it's usually a cop-out to say "I could have done better", but in this case, it was a struggle to complete the drawing. Not because of the technical details, but because of the emotions.</p><p>Wakanda Forever!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1qWPzp0eNoWP_5HnAomzN7g0A05BG8OUnV6K6LuachYS5L7aFr3g1v8p7UpxqrxJ-ef3nSryMsHL33LtJdBfkzK5Jz9d75AmyNorIqAAwf6-C574JO3MjJkrBVfS7ssinroi59imr8hm8/s2048/ChadBBP0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1434" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1qWPzp0eNoWP_5HnAomzN7g0A05BG8OUnV6K6LuachYS5L7aFr3g1v8p7UpxqrxJ-ef3nSryMsHL33LtJdBfkzK5Jz9d75AmyNorIqAAwf6-C574JO3MjJkrBVfS7ssinroi59imr8hm8/s640/ChadBBP0001.JPG" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-62500520792559044382020-02-16T13:13:00.001-05:002020-02-16T13:13:29.936-05:00Review: The Mona Lisa TwinsI have decided to write again on my blog. And I'm writing about music. I know I originally started this site about comics, but I have made the occasional foray into other media areas, so this is not unprecedented. I'm just really excited about something, so I thought I'd comment.<br />
<br />
I discovered the Mona Lisa Twins a few months ago and immediately began to devour all if their posted videos on their website/You Tube channel. Wow do I love to listen to their music! They have a very retro-sixties sound, including doing cover versions of many 60's songs, chiefly by the Beatles. I have previous blog entries about such things as The Turtles, so yeah, this is one of my favorite eras if music. I discovered the Beach Boys in the late '70s, listening to their great harmonies and catchy pop songs, and expanded from there. My biggest Beatles experience was when I was in college and started playing some Beatles songs with friends of mine, one who went on to front a Beatles cover band and still performs lots of oldies--sometimes as "John Lennon".<br />
<br />
But on to the Mona Lisa Twins. I love any "young" person who appreciates that music did not begin in the year 2000. The twins (I'll use MLT for short from now on) are currently 25 and have been performing since they were 13! They are incredible musicians and singers, and they harmonize like...well....they are sisters, so I guess it comes naturally.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfrLB1i3oUjMHdjGtikOjRhAoZ_Cf0ymY9_9Ym1pI4V_k-v-cLoMZ6VSMvBfOCb6JoPaJAB_QLz7RHpxpAXhqpuEaPbtq0u7HCXwogxcsKHZkHqXhJxTTEtcYJ31Zo71wc80RA4c_72fu/s1600/monalisa_twins_when_were_together_cover_900.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixfrLB1i3oUjMHdjGtikOjRhAoZ_Cf0ymY9_9Ym1pI4V_k-v-cLoMZ6VSMvBfOCb6JoPaJAB_QLz7RHpxpAXhqpuEaPbtq0u7HCXwogxcsKHZkHqXhJxTTEtcYJ31Zo71wc80RA4c_72fu/s320/monalisa_twins_when_were_together_cover_900.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I recently acquired their first two albums of original music: When We're Together and Orange and have been listening to them a lot. The two albums differ a bit in style, and I think there's a lot of growth between the first and second, but they are both exceptional. My favorite song off of When We're Together is "I Wanna Kiss You" which is just a fun pop song with cool background vocals. I don't know how to review music like a real critic (or someone who understands the technical aspects of music) but I also just love "I Don't Know Birds That Well" and "Nothing is in Vain". The latter is a bit more psychedelic, with simple lyrics but a melody that is enchanting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Orange has a lot more variety in musical styles, plus the addition of a certain John Sebastian on blues harmonica on two stellar tracks. The lyrics of a lot of these songs are amazing. "Waiting for the Waiter" is about slow service...or something much deeper. "Sweet Loraine" is an addictive tune about a girl who may just not be so sweet after all! "Count on Me" is the song I wish I could figure out the chords to because it's positive message would be nice to play. But my absolute favorite song is definitely "That's Life". Great harmonies, great tune, excellent lyrics!<br />
<br />
So I was thinking what would I like to know or what would I like to hear from the MLT?<br />
<br />
My questions:<br />
<br />
Why "Orange"? Is it your favorite color? Why no songs with cool rhymes for orange?<br />
<br />
Do you each have a favorite Beatle? (I do not have a favorite MLT. Cannot choose. Love you both!)<br />
<br />
Can you do a cover a Turtles song, but not Happy Together?<br />
<br />
For those of you who haven't heard, here's some links to my favorite MLT songs.<br />

And since this is my art blog. I drew a cartoony rendition of the MLT here it is!Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-2878370960796172882019-09-15T20:35:00.000-04:002019-09-15T20:35:10.437-04:00The F.E.D.SI have been thinking lately about how I am ever going to complete the saga of the F.E.D.S, the comic series I named this blog after. I began writing and drawing the FEDs in 1999! About 8 billion years ago. It is a series of mini-comics, that I photocopied and stapled together, as was the norm at the time. However, it doesn't seem prudent to continue it in such a format, as it won't been seen by many readers.<br />
<br />
With Mutant Elf I have been able to post a weekly webcomic, that apparently reaches a decent sized audience. Though who knows how many views are really readers?<br />
<br />
So, anyway, here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to alternate Mutant Elf and the FEDs on Comic Fury. I think this is the only way I'll ever get around to finishing the FEDs story. Which does have a definite ending. Then, when I get enough "chapters" done, I'll publish it in a trade paperback of some kind.<br />
<br />
I will also be loading the original FEDs series on the Comic Fury site, hopefully a couple of pages a week. A refresher on what has happened so far!<br />
<br />
Look for the FEDs in two weeks, and a new chapter of Mutant Elf starting the week after!<br />

<br />
I was reading the new Chimera Strikes! Webcomic on the site <a href="https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/chimera-strikes/list?title_no=253420" target="_blank">"webtoons"</a> and I thought it time to get back to writing some decent stuff on my blog. I do like to talk about and promote things I like, after all.<br />
<br />
I'm sure sometime in the past I've written about Mike Indovina and Paul Schultz's comics work. I've been a fan since I was going to the small press room at Mid-Ohio con of their various works. Paul's done some great retro-super hero comics with his Serial Squad and related works, and Mike has plenty of cool Greek Myth- related stuff with his Satyr comics. They have also worked together before on comics, which I seem to remember including Chimera.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0qyrxtINMBg0yRbfi7-u4MsoYxcoDMWZ6IBZDa12y9bxF0zeRDeLtsSr1J8cI9-zyVjWP7P73LwmvYN2FttIoJfjWL5JYCHCyaf3ig8ZCS7HuktR4KT7lYhUKrt-Hc0Qy_4QBI34c_I19/s1600/chimera_strikes__2_cover_by_paulschultz-d6k9dyf%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1104" data-original-width="724" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0qyrxtINMBg0yRbfi7-u4MsoYxcoDMWZ6IBZDa12y9bxF0zeRDeLtsSr1J8cI9-zyVjWP7P73LwmvYN2FttIoJfjWL5JYCHCyaf3ig8ZCS7HuktR4KT7lYhUKrt-Hc0Qy_4QBI34c_I19/s320/chimera_strikes__2_cover_by_paulschultz-d6k9dyf%255B1%255D.jpg" width="209" /></a></div>
<br />
The "original" Chimera was a gadget-wielding hero in the days of WWII. The "current" Chimera is somehow connected to this character. In this story the original Chimera was only a character in pulp magazine. Maybe. Because something weird and mystical has turned an otherwise ordinary man into the crime fighter from the comic.<br />
<br />
Instead of telling you more, I'll tell you to read the comic. The style and format are very different that a typical comic, using the vertical space of the webpage and having the action flow downward. I like this a lot! And Mike and Paul are excellent storytellers.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I give it two big thumbs up! Check it out, please!Stevenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02523932676697168819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1847907336999548047.post-6139059706059234072018-12-27T20:29:00.002-05:002018-12-27T20:29:53.607-05:00Storm GoddessLast of the series.<br />

I can't express how I feel, yet I feel I must try.<br />
<br />
Stan Lee is proof that art can have a serious positive impact on the lives of those who consume it. He was a great writer and speaker, and he became great by doing things his own way, not following the crowd. He was humble about his success, though he hyped his products in any way he could, as a great salesman should. He helped create a Pop Culture world with the Marvel Universe.<br />
<br />
The man wasn't just a writer, editor and creator. He was an American treasure!<br />

I haven't read much of the Phantom's exploits, but I always thought he was rather interesting. Here's what I think now:<br />
<br />
The earliest tales of the Phantom Stranger, created during the 1950s, were much less mystical than what the character evolved into. The Stranger had the ability to appear and disappear, but other aspects of the adventures were not magical at all, and the presence of Doctor Thirteen, the Ghost Breaker, ensured they would stay so, as the good Doc was a great debunker of all things supernatural. The stories changed when DC brought the character back in 1969, revealing the true mystical nature of the Stranger, and poor Dr. Thirteen was pretty much relegated to comedy relief, claiming the very obvious magical goings-on were tricks. Eventually, the Doc was given a backup feature, which works better. Since I really enjoy real-life debunking, I think there's room in the DC universe for such a character. Just because there's real magic in DC, doesn't mean there isn't fake stuff, too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin_KPq4H87ToVnlIpea0hlnLn8vfBlgLIdTYrkOi1uV2TBXxiJLhLI1YHiIVGPGeWSrThMWzeyLNlw4ogr1AwCsMZlhsm4aCvXlSeb4MuIHf_zmjtPLWo_0ecVDLybrBmAE5dKEPNldzKP/s1600/ps1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: #0066cc; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; orphans: 2; text-align: center; text-decoration: underline; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="474" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin_KPq4H87ToVnlIpea0hlnLn8vfBlgLIdTYrkOi1uV2TBXxiJLhLI1YHiIVGPGeWSrThMWzeyLNlw4ogr1AwCsMZlhsm4aCvXlSeb4MuIHf_zmjtPLWo_0ecVDLybrBmAE5dKEPNldzKP/s320/ps1.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
As for the Phantom himself, he really is an interesting character. He's in a constant battle with evil, trying to help regular people resist bad tidings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ-PjTIsEiedMHQ_2zrJxvkDP9Q9u1MyaOgEucuYY3IMsy2jbDkSTXlDJljBTVVzcHWnj4s4LaNJB5KKPTClK5TFWpn2gtkVwyJf39JBlTTZTFzhX6F57hBQ6LCMW8PlL56lZG3EjWRoF3/s1600/ps10%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: #0066cc; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; orphans: 2; text-align: center; text-decoration: underline; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"></a></div>
But what makes the character different and interesting is that his true identity and origin are never revealed. But in to what really inspired me to write about this topic: Jim Aparo!<br />

I read Batman and the Outsiders for a while, and Batman around the time of Death in the Family. I always liked Aparo's Batman. However, I never knew about his run on PS. Aparo's Phantom Stranger is absolutely beautiful! Magnificent storytelling, and awesome use of back and white. It sets a mood, and tells a tale! Just about perfect.<br />
<br />
And I was also inspired to draw my own Phantom Stranger sketch:<br />
